Oakes/EDU 151A/B Community Literacies Seminar & Field Study in Curriculum Design, Observation, & Team Teaching are taken concurrently by new mentors in Corre la Voz, for a total of 5 units. Enrollment: Permission code, please email instructor. 151B (field study) satisfies the PR-S requirement, and may be repeated for credit with a grade of B or higher in both A and B.
Oakes/EDU 151A is a 2-unit seminar that introduces new mentors to Corre la Voz pedagogies for engagement and development; ethical and constructive observation practices; and strength-based assessment. Course readings focus primarily on methods for supporting cultural dignity and bilingual learning in our multimodal literacy activities. Students write response papers that connect to classroom reflections and a final paper combining readings with field study data.
Oakes/EDU 151B is a 3-unit field study that provides training and structure in mentor work in the Corre la Voz program. Each mentor is assigned one or two students as mentees. Mentors work in low-ratio learning activities with these students, focusing on reflective discussion; log their engagement during diverse activities; and develop strategies to build on their strengths and interests to advance growth. Mentors also work in committees twice per quarter to design and lead “dinámicas” for the classroom; and they work in teams to plan and guide creative projects–e.g., drama, movie-making, poetry, and research. 151B Satisfies the PR-S Requirement.
Many departments at UCSC accept 151A/B as an elective for upper-division credit.
Enrollment in 151A/B is by permission code, please email instructor.
