In this course we explore what stories are, how they help us learn, how they shape our identity, and how they can foster social justice.  Following the theme of Oakes College Core, “Communicating Diversity for a Just Society,” we use journaling and practice storytelling in different forms to express questions and insights about our lives, and connect and learn from each other.   2 units.   Enrollment–for Oakes students or by permission code.

Student Testimonials

“After this quarter, my final thoughts on storytelling have shifted to being more valuable. I value it more in a sense of learning, rather than connection. Before this class I saw storytelling as a way of connecting with others; however, as this quarter has gone on I’ve learned from the stories of my fellow classmates. Storytelling is an art of human expressions. Storytelling for all will live on until we are no longer on this earth; however, what makes it more special is the way we choose to tell our story. Storytelling will allow me to not only have a connection with other[s], but also have a voice within this generation/ community.” -Stacy

“I think story telling is a great outlet. It helps to express feelings and reflect on life and past experience. I also learned so much from other classmates sharing their stories and I hope they learn something from me sharing mine. In my field I never get to write about myself and be very creative. This class has helped me with my creative writing and expression and it has been really awesome. I think in the future I will try to write and maybe journal more to keep up this outlet. It helps with stress and anxiety and reflection. I think story telling is healthy and helps to connect people in community. I enjoyed this class and I am grateful I had a place to go every week that encouraged me to focus on community engagement rather than just academics.” -Hailey

“Part of me is incredibly thankful that all these people were okay with sharing their stories in front of me. The feelings I felt listening to their stories (almost cried twice) makes up for the tuition I have to pay to go here this quarter. It is such a pleasure to hear people get real with themselves and others, and to make the audience feel alive–no longer bothered by our phones or fake problems we create, but to truly give a listening ear to someone. Storytelling is super powerful and I plan to utilize it until I die.” -Matthew
